MENA IX: Energy panellist – Ali Aissaoui, Research Fellow, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES)

Ali Aissaoui, Research Fellow, Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) and a former adviser to the Algerian Energy Ministry will examine the country’s gas trends and the prospects for outside investment at MENA Investment Exchange: Energy in London on 29-30 September.
In an OIES paper published in May, Aissaoui foresees a gloomy outlook in which Algeria’s “gas production will be stagnating at best”.  With rising domestic gas demand and new upstream projects failing to compensate for maturing fields he calculates that, “in a moderate demand scenario, Algeria would be left with only 15bcm/yr to export by 2030. In a lower production or high demand scenario, it will cease exporting altogether” – and might have to import gas.
CbI’s African Energy reviewed this paper as part of its analysis of the June government reshuffle that saw Sonelgaz president director-general (PDG) Noureddine Bouterfa promoted to energy minister.
