Kweku Awotwi, Principal, Africa Power Systems Management
Kweku is a Principal of Africa Power Systems Management, a company that provides bespoke management, operational, and technical inputs to optimise the performance of African utility assets.
He is a past Chief Executive of Ghana’s Volta River Authority, Ghana’s state electricity utility. During his four and a half years as CEO, he oversaw unprecedented improvements in VRA’s operational and financial performance. He also completed a $330m financing to expand a 220MW thermal plant, built Ghana’s first, grid-connected solar plant; operationalised the VRA’s distribution company; and introduced the use of financial derivatives to purchase its fuel requirements.
He is an original shareholder, co-founder and developer of the 340MW combined cycle thermal-fired Cenpower project – the first project-financed IPP in Ghana – that reached financial close in 2014, and is in construction.
Previously, he headed business development and strategic planning for Ashanti Goldfields Company and served as Manager, business planning and analysis at Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation.
