The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) is the U.S. Government’s development finance institution. Peter Ballinger is OPIC’s managing director is based in Johannesburg having previously managed OPIC’s Asia operations out of New Delhi and the Europe/Eurasia region from Istanbul. In his current role he is responsible for new business in the Africa/Middle East/Indian Ocean region for OPIC’s two main product lines, project finance and political risk insurance.
OPIC is a significant funder of projects in Africa and the region now represents nearly a quarter of OPIC’s global portfolio, including some of the largest projects OPIC has ever insured and financed. Under the Power Africa initiative alone, OPIC has committed up to US$1.5 billion in support for clean energy projects in Africa. Mr. Ballinger is a graduate of the American University in Washington, D.C. (MSc) and of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland (MBA).
