Solar in the Sahel

An AIX online meeting

12h00 to 13h30 GMT | 22 February 2022

Panel discussion: Solar in the Sahel

The meeting will examine solar investments in six countries: Senegal and the G5 Sahel states (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger). It will ask, what is required to encourage private sector participation and build capacity, how to prepare projects and mitigate risks, and what especially political and economic issues confront investment in the region.

  • Daniel Schroth at the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Sergio Portatadino from the Power Africa Senior Advisors Group programme will be focusing on the Desert to Power initiative which looks to make the Sahel the world’s largest solar production zone with up to 10,000 MW of solar generation capacity.
  • Zaidoon Khouri at the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) will give an overview of the MCC’s compact with Burkina Faso – a programme intended to address the nation’s electricity challenges.
  • Obbie Banda at the African Trade Insurance Agency and Bernhard van Meeteren at FMO will be sharing their perspectives on investments in solar projects in the Sahel.
  • Jon Marks, Founder African Energy will be giving his frank view of the political issues confronting investment in the region.
